Achieving a fully decarbonized society and a complete net-zero energy system requires more than just renewable electricity and green electrons. Net-zero energy scenarios estimate that 50–70% of activities can be electrified. However, sectors like steel, chemical, and fertilizer production—as well as high-energy transport such as aviation and shipping—will require additional solutions. To close this gap, renewable gases and fuels such as green hydrogen, bio- and synthetic methane, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are essential.
